How German EU Blue Card salary thresholds affect your job search
A practical look at how Blue Card salary floors shape which German vacancies are realistic for international professionals.
German employers advertising skilled roles rarely state that a vacancy supports an EU Blue Card. Candidates still need to compare the offered gross salary with the threshold that applies to their occupation and year of application.
For shortage occupations and recent graduates of German higher education, a lower threshold may apply. Everyone else should treat the general Blue Card floor as the planning figure when shortlisting roles in Bavaria, Berlin, or other Länder.
During a job search, ask for the annual gross figure early—before investing weeks in interviews for a role that cannot meet the residence pathway you need. If the offer sits below the threshold, discuss whether the employer can adjust the package or whether a different residence title is more suitable.
Keep written notes of salary discussions. When you later prepare residence paperwork, the employment contract must show a figure that authorities can check against the applicable Blue Card rules.
